5 Facts about Strep Throat

Strep throat is a bacterial infection within the throat and the tonsils. Typically symptoms of Strep Throat would include irritated and inflamed sore throat. These symptoms cause severe discomfort such as the inability to swallow, as well as swollen tonsils and lymph nodes.

Here are a few facts you need to know about Strep Throat:

  1. It takes 2-3 days for strep to begin, and can last for up to 7 days with or without antibiotics. If strep throat goes untreated without antibiotics, you remain contagious for up to 3 weeks regardless if all symptoms have gone away.
  2. Strep throat can be passed from person to person. When a person infected with strep throat breathes, coughs, or sneezes, the bacteria are released into the air causing others to become ill.
  3. It is still possible to have strep even if you have had your tonsils removed, although it doesn’t occur as frequently as it normally would if you had tonsils.
  4. There are two different ways to diagnose Strep.
    1. Rapid strep test analyzes the bacteria in your throat to see if strep is the cause of your sore throat.
    2. Throat culture is also a test that analyzes cells from the back of your throat. The cells are gathered with a cotton swab and then placed in a container with substances that promote the growth of strep bacteria.
  5. The best way to avoid getting strep throat is to stay away from anyone who has it. Be sure to wash your hands, do not share anything that may go into another person’s mouth and cover your mouth when coughing.
